Nice to meet you Luke. You did well tonight. Rest now.. sleep well, eat well (and plenty) and get some light training in if you feel up to it - the blood flow will get your muscles feeling better

haha!! I took a while off for an injury recently, then came back with a really heavy session. Couldn't walk up the stairs properly for 2 days, had to use my hands to help!! Once you train a few times regularly you won't get that feeling

I never really get sore from technical training now.. just from weight lifting. Especially my hamstrings and glutes.. and i don't like it, haha. Annoys me, should be seen as an unfortunate side effect of training not as indicator of anything else like work rate.

I do quite like it because it makes me feel like I have a good workout! I tried with a tennis ball and OMG hurts more than the foam roller! But it does feel good, yeah I hope I don't get as sore the more I train, all though saying that trained a bit to hard tuesday doing tacs and now the tendons that help lift my foot up are hurting, should be ok for friday thought any of you going tomorrow?

Hey guys, went to the gym for the first time today. I wanted to do weighted squats to build some strength in my legs, wondered what you guys would say the best technique is? and also any tips on the correct form? cheers

Feet shoulder width apart, or a little further.
Toes pointing out.
Squeeze shoulder blades together like your gripping a pen with them. Whack the bar on.
Arch your lower back and keep it arched alll the time.
Start by breaking at the hips and SITTING BACK.
Make sure you push your knees so they track over your toes.
Go to just below parallel.
Start back up by lifting your butt up first. Remember to keep your back arched, head up and chest out.
Focus on technique over weight at first, even if it's just the bar.

What do you mean Dumi?
When people talk about squats, it's with a barbell.

Neither, unless you are doing complexes. Conditioning isn't what people seem to think it is. Conditioning and strength training are different. Conditioning is basically like cardio work.. keeping you in good condition i guess, it also helps build lactic tolerance.
I'm assuming you mean strength training anyway. In which case, it's tough to say if you dont have a squat rack and bench.. but I would probably still say barbell.

Just below parallel? It's all about ass to grass

Not really. You lose most of your form/tightness going ATG.
A few points from Rippetoe about ass to grass: Going ATG makes the lumbar muscles relax the lordosis and makes the hamstrings relax. Risks intervertebral discs. Kills controlled rebound and most people go down with such velocity that they bounce out anyway.
His general rule: go deep enough with hard arched back and tight hamstrings. It will be below parallel, but not ATG.
ATG also puts unnecessary pressure on the knees.

out of interest, what's the general consensus on form with pistols? (and indeed on pistols with a 10kg weight?)
ditto for Bulgarian split squats (or BS squats for short...)

I don't think I'll stop going ATG, I see no problems if you maintain form / control

I dont really recommend pistols for a number of reasons. If you cant do 10 strict, perfect form reps, don't add weight. Bulgarians are a completely different thing. Whack your leg on an object not too high behind you (a little below knee height). Make sure your lead leg isnt tooo far away, but not close enough so the knee tracks over the toes. For extra hip mobility you could elevate both front and back legs. Dan - deep as you can with arched back and tight hams, as Mark said, if that's ATG for you then cool. Too many people say they go ATG just to boast about how low they go. Form > weight > ego. Health > ego. ATG doesnt really make much difference apart from more hamstring involvement - but your hams get hit hard by a squat as it is and you should be doing extra assistance work for the posterior chain anyway. Deep as you can with hard arched back and tight hams.
